Kenya was my first African safari, and it gave me all the landscapes I had pictured for years: golden grasslands, elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, giraffes beside acacia trees, and zebras scattered across the savanna. I traveled through Nairobi, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, and Amboseli on a private family safari, and every stop had a different feeling.\n\nIf you are planning your first safari, Kenya is a beautiful place to start. I would build a route around Masai Mara for classic wildlife and Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro, then leave room for Nairobi before or after the safari. Yes, especially for a first safari. I booked a private family trip with Adventure East Africa, and the guides made the experience much easier. They handled the complicated drives and park entries, listened to wildlife reports over the radio, and knew when a sighting was worth waiting for.
I visited in August, which was beautiful for grassland scenery and migration hopes. The dry-season months from June through October are popular for wildlife viewing, while the Great Migration usually makes Masai Mara especially exciting from July through October. A river crossing is never guaranteed, even during the best window.
Bring neutral, muted clothes that you can layer. Our mornings were cold, afternoons were hot, and dust got everywhere, so I was happy to have a light jacket, sun protection, closed shoes, and a face covering for dusty stretches. A good camera lens is wonderful, but you should also bring extra batteries and a comfortable day bag.
Give yourself a day in Nairobi before the safari if you can. The Giraffe Centre is a lovely place to get close to giraffes, and Giraffe Manor is the iconic splurge hotel next door, where giraffes visit the property. Nairobi National Park and the elephant orphanage can also make a great addition if your schedule has room.
