Indonesia is a country I am still excited to explore more of, but my guides here begin in Bali, where I have spent time beyond the busiest beach towns and found some of the most beautiful stays of my travels. I would not try to treat it as a stand-in for the whole country, though. Java, Komodo, Lombok, and the smaller islands all offer completely different trips, so choose one or two areas and build around them.
I would give one region at least a week. Indonesia looks small on a map, but island-to-island travel takes time, and a seven-to-ten-day Bali trip can already include beach time, a jungle stay, cafes, and a few beautiful day trips without constant packing. Add a second island only if you have enough time to enjoy it.
Yes, even though cards are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and larger stores. The official tourism board recommends carrying cash before heading to more remote areas, where larger notes can be hard to break. I would withdraw in a city or tourist center and keep smaller bills for local shops, drivers, and tips.
They are useful in many cities and popular tourist areas, but I would not depend on them for a rural hotel or an early airport transfer. At Lodge in the Woods in Kaba-Kaba, for example, I could get a Grab from Seminyak but would arrange a driver for leaving because app cars were scarce nearby.
Many passport holders can use a Visa on Arrival or e-VoA for an initial 30-day visit, with one possible 30-day extension, but eligibility and rules can change. Check Indonesia Immigration directly before booking instead of relying on a general travel guide.
It depends on the island. For Bali and much of Java, May through September is a popular drier window, but Indonesia spans a huge area with different weather patterns. I would choose your specific island first, then check the seasonal conditions for that route rather than planning around one country-wide answer.
