Why Visit Panama
Panama surprised me. It wasn’t on my radar until I booked a trip, and Casco Viejo alone made me glad I did. The historic quarter of Panama City is packed with restored colonial architecture, incredible rooftop bars, and a cafe and restaurant scene that punches well above what most people expect. The contrast between the 400-year-old neighborhood and the gleaming modern skyline across the bay is one of my favorite views from any city.
The country runs on US dollars, which makes budgeting simple. Uber works everywhere in the city, and Casco Viejo is easily walkable. December through April is the dry season and the best window for clear skies and good light. Panama is also a great gateway to the rest of Central America, with easy flights to Colombia, Costa Rica, and the Caribbean.

Yes, in Panama City. The municipal water system is one of the best in Latin America and tap water in hotels and tourist areas is treated and safe to drink. Outside the city, especially in rural areas and the Caribbean coast like Bocas del Toro, stick to bottled or filtered water.
Tocumen International Airport is about 30 to 40 minutes from Panama City depending on traffic. Uber picks up from the arrivals level and costs around 10 to 15 dollars. There is also a metro line that connects to the city but it does not go directly to the airport yet. Uber is by far the easiest option.
Panama City's yellow taxis are not metered and drivers often overcharge tourists. Your best bet is Uber, which is widely available, reliable, and much cheaper. If you do take a yellow taxi, agree on a price before getting in. Never hail random unmarked cars off the street.
No specific vaccinations are required to enter Panama. Routine vaccines are enough for most travelers. There is no malaria risk in Panama City, but mosquitoes are present year-round, so bring repellent with DEET especially if you are heading to the islands or jungle areas.
Not in the city. Panama City is easy to get around with Uber and the metro, and Casco Viejo is best explored on foot. If you want to visit the highlands around Boquete or drive to the Caribbean coast, renting a car gives you more flexibility. Roads between major destinations are generally well-maintained. For the San Blas Islands you will need to fly or take a 4x4 transfer since there is no paved road.
